Hosted by Noreen Neary & Bonnie Clark
The official dates were July 14-16, 2022 but members started arriving the previous weekend to enjoy the surrounding greater New York City area and hang out with new and old friends. As the week progressed more and more convention attendees arrived each day. Everyone had a wonderful time all week and extensive salt and pepper shaker talk occurred.
Pre-Convention Activities
Although there were no "official" club sponsored pre-convention group tours or activities, many club members did extensive sightseeing in and around New York City.
Liberty Park, Statue of Liberty, & Ellis Island
Atlantic City & Coney Island
911 Memorial & Museum
One World Trade Tower & Observatory
Central Park & Zoo
Time Square & Broadway
Pre-Convention Shaker Rooms - Buying & Selling
Another BIG reason to get to convention earlier in the week is to see all the shaker rooms that club members fill with their shakers for sale. Come early to pick up the best deals and find the hidden treasures.
Pre-Convention Shaker Rooms - Buying & Selling
Even if you are not actively adding to your collection, many club members just come earlier in the week to enjoy friendships they've built over the years. We frequently find ourselves catching up over drinks and dinner.
Convention Officially Begins
Thursday July 14th, 2022:
Raffle Basket Room
Although donations for the raffle baskets had been pouring in all week long, and our club organizers had been busy setting up throughout the week, Thursday was the first official time that attendees could see the loot for themselves. Many raffle tickets were already sold and placed into their boxes in the hopes they'd be drawn in the next couple days. Thank you for all the wonderful donations and thank you for all the volunteers setting up, selling tickets, running the raffles, and more.
First Timer's Reception
It looks like we had multiple first time convention goers enjoying a reception in their honor. The photographs show a few of our Canadian long time members entertaining the first timers with a game.
Kids Party
The Newmyers were gracious enough to once again organize the kids party that normally occurs Thursday before the official kick off of the convention. This year the children had a fun scavenger hunt around the convention hotel which then culminated in picking prizes and finally a wonderful dinner together in the hotel's restaurant.
Friday July 15th, 2022:
Presentation
Once the convention was underway Friday morning, Josh Weaver stepped in to give a presentation on cartoon salt & pepper shakers that was put together by Horst Paetzold entitled What's So Funny?: Cartoon Shakers Thru Time.
If you missed convention, you can still check out this wonderful presentation by clicking here.
Raffles
Raffles of the wonderful baskets donated by individual members, chapters, and the club were raffled off both Friday & Saturday at various times of the day. Many tickets were sold. And many members went home happy with their winnings.
Costume Contest
Friday afternoon was the most anticipated event - the costume contest. There were so many wonderful costumes to enjoy. And they certainly entertained us. The preparation began in the back room as the contestants got all dressed up.
Marie Antoinette
Alice in Wonderland
Hawaiian Hula Girl
Powerpuff Girls
Snow White and Seven Dwarfs
Display Contests
Do you want to see all the winners and who entered the display contests? Simply check out the 2022 September's issue of the club's newsletter by clicking here.
Shaker Theme Contest
Every year at convention, attendees enter a shaker from their collection that they believe best represents that years theme. With the theme being "Shaker Power", the field was wide open to interpretation from superhero, electricity, tough shakers, and many more. Junior members get into the action as well.
Saturday July 16th, 2022:
Lifetime Achievement Award
Congratulations to Louise Davis for earning and being recognized for all her dedication to the club over her many years of membership.
Presentation
On Saturday, maybe the highlight of the convention took place during first time presenter - Alan Kafitz's presentation on "Fuzzy" shakers entitled Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Shaker.
Alan entertained the entire audience while educating us on flocked shakers that don't get the respect they deserve.
Again, if you missed this presentation you can still check it out by clicking here.
2023 Convention Presentation
In the afternoon as the anticipation builded, we were finally told where the 2023 convention would be held. And we were all pleased to hear that Ruthie Denney would be chairing the 2023 annual convention in Springfield Illinois.
Banquet & Entertainment
The convention culminated with our Saturday evening banquet which included a DJ, dancing, and a very popular first - a photo booth.
After the party, all the winners of the contests were announced and the official S&Ps were passed to next year's convention chairperson Ruthie Denney.
